2013 Asian Festival is a Rousing Success

Cool weather can't keep spirits down

The 2013 Asian Festival, held on May 4, once again displayed the cultural diversity of the Charlotte area Asian community. Thousands of attendees enjoyed a variety of offerings, including the annual Dragon Boat Race, Miss Asia Carolinas, the international Cultural Showcase, and vendors providing a variety of delicious food choices and authentic crafts and gift items.

Miss Asia Carolinas

The 2013 Miss Asia Carolinas again displayed a wide diversity of culture and an exceptional blend of talents. The 2013 Miss Asia Carolinas overall winner was Nupur Charyalu, Miss India. Miss China, Julia Gong, finished in second place. Miss Vietnam, Kem Kem, finished in third. Judy Wei, Miss China, won the Miss Talent award with her Chinese modern dance / color guard. June Nean, Miss Cambodia, was chosen as Miss Congeniality by the participants themselves. In a new category, Miss Friendship went  to Ngun Khen Tial of Burma. Monique Tuzon, the Miss Asia Carolinas 2012 winner, did the honors and crowned the new Miss Asia Carolinas. Dr. Nini Bautista, MAC Founder and Chair, handed out scholarship checks and gifts, amounting to more than $5,000.

Cultural Showcase

A large audience under the tent enjoyed variety of cultural presentations, including the Little Lotus Dance Troupe of Xiaosong Her, the Cambodian Wedding fashion ensemble, classical Indian dances from Dr. Maha Gingrich's students, and high energy modern Vietnamese dance, and Martial Arts demonstrations by the Peaceful Dragon, and Tae Kwon Do under Grandmaster Pang.  

Thailand was represented by Ko Myar, who sang a beautiful Karenni love song and by Rapeeporn Tumgeon, an interpreter in Laotian & Thai,  who won two NC championships in Thai boxing. Montagnard Hieu Rahlan and his sister Tuyet sang a gospel song. Ranjana & Tanka Dhimcal performed a Nepali dance "Flowers."

Dragon Boat Race

Despite the unseasonably cool weather, the Dragon Boat Race was the most successful yet. Thirty-seven teams participated in the race. In the Premier Mixed Division, RDBC, Raleigh Relentless won the Gold with a time of 55:47 seconds. Wells Fargo Aquabeasts I took the A Championship Gold with a time of 57:42 seconds.
